21st Century Superintendent Certification Program

The Department of Educational Leadership Studies is excited about offering a 21st Century Superintendent Certification Program. This program is designed for exceptional educational leaders who are ready to take the next step in their career.

The program will be delivered online with three on-site meetings per course at designated locations around the state. On-site meetings will be held in Morgantown, Charleston, Martinsburg, Parkersburg and Wheeling via WVU’s two-way Interactive Video Network (IViN). Content delivery, resources and interaction with classmates will take place through WVU’s course management system known as WVU eCampus.

We have assembled an outstanding team of six experienced school superintendents and one West Virginia University higher education faculty member—all school leaders with the knowledge, enthusiasm, and determination to create and deliver a progressive program. The team’s primary focus is to prepare exceptional educational leaders for service as superintendents in West Virginia school districts. The team designed the coursework as problem-based learning experiences usable and transferable directly to the work of school superintendents. A unique feature of the program is the internship experience that is built into the plan of study. This on-site experience will afford educational leaders of tomorrow an opportunity to work side-by-side with sitting school superintendents.

Experience is priceless. That is why we are so excited about this new program and its esteemed faculty. Having individuals with superintendent experience like Dr. Debbie Akers, Dr. Sharon Harsh, Dr. Marsha Carr-Lambert, Dr. DeEdre Lundeen, Dr. Jim Phares, and Dr. Joseph Super as well as WVU faculty member Dr. Ted Price will provide participants with broad knowledge and hands-on experience that will allow them to become true school leaders, assuring for our West Virginia children the education they will need in tomorrow’s world.
